Joe F. Turley – Obituary

Joe F. Turley, age 90 years, a resident of Marion, Illinois and a former resident of Vienna, passed away Thursday morning, March 3, 2016, at 9:55 a.m. at his home.

Joe was born March 14, 1925 in Vienna. He was the eldest child of Walter Marion and Mayme Carrie (Shetler) Turley.

On May 16, 1946, Joe was united in marriage to Bonnie L. Soper at St. Paul Catholic Church in Vienna. She survives.

Other survivors include: their children – Mike (Becky) Turley of Ozark and Geri (Dan) Fruge’ of Marion; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister – Anna Mae Street of Vienna; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

Joe was a 1943 graduate of Vienna High School. He was a standout basketball player during his high school career, as well as when he attended college in San Luis Obispo, California and during his military service. He joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard an L.C.I. (Landing Craft Infantry) in the Pacific Theater of Operation during World War II. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1945. Joe was a life member of the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 in Vienna.

Joe was a lifelong businessman. Along with his father, he operated Turley & Son Grocery in Vienna. He later owned and operated Hillview Health Care Center as well as the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store both in Vienna. Later, Joe operated the Ace Hardware Store with locations in Marion, Energy and Du Quoin.

Joe was a member of the former Vienna Lions Club.

Joe was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and was a 4th Degree member of the Marion Council # 2210 Knights of Columbus.

Joe was an avid golfer. He and Bonnie enjoyed raising and riding horses. They were also accomplished ballroom dancers. Joe was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals Baseball fan. He is remembered for his love of people and zest for life. Joe loved to tell a joke and make people smile.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral service.
