Malchus I. Smith, age 92 years, a resident of rural Grantsburg (the Renshaw community), passed away Sunday evening, January 24, 2016, at 9:21 p.m. at Massac Memorial Hospital.
Malchus was born March 27, 1923 in Hamilton County Illinois. He was the youngest of four children born to Everett Smith & Clara (Irvin) Smith.
On June 5, 1939, Malchus was united in marriage to Dollie M. Trout at Morganfield, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2008.
Survivors include: his children – Bobbie (Willa Mae) Smith of Brookport, Shirley Tobin of Chatham, Sharion (Arnold) Casey of Metropolis, and Beverly (Larry) Bowman of Golconda; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and a sister – Wilma Rose Smith of McLeansboro.
In addition to his parents and wife, Malchus was preceded in death by: a son-in-law – Mike Tobin; a great grandson – Kelton Smith; and 2 brothers – Dick Smith and Lewis Smith.
Malchus was a U.S. Army veteran. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operation and in Occupied Japan from 1945 – 1947.
Malchus was employed in the construction trade. He worked as a laborer and later as a foreman. Malchus was formerly a member of the Laborer’s International Union.
He was of the Baptist faith. Malchus enjoyed gardening, coon and mink hunting, and attending antique auctions.
A graveside service will be conducted Friday afternoon, January 29, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the Temple Hill Cemetery in Pope County Illinois. Pastor Mike Hardison will officiate. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Friday. There will be no public visitation.
