Lewis Wingate, 79, of Belleville, formerly of Anna, died Tuesday, August 18, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville.  He was born in Waltham, MA, the son of John L. and Mary D. Wingate.

Lewis is survived by his children, David Tuthill Wingate, Mary Catherine Wingate-Funk, Elizabeth Scott Wingate, Margeaux Louise Raymond, John Page Wingate and Lewis Adam Wingate; sixteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Paula and her husband Karl Yehle; other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Merridee Glenn.

Wingate graduated from Hanover College in Indiana where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.  He received his advanced degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, MO.  He had a private law practice before serving two terms as the Johnson County State’s Attorney before retirement.

He was a member of B.P.O.E., Loyal Order of Moose Club and the Shriners International.  Hobbies he enjoyed included fishing, model ship building and fox hunting. He was an active member of the Wolf Creek Hounds Club.

Funeral services for Mr. Lewis Wingate will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 25 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Bobby Richardson officiating. Interment will be in the Anna City Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 24, at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.

Family suggests in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Envelopes will be available in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
