Gertrude Becker – Obituary

Eva-Gertrude-Becker-1440862853Eva Gertrude Becker, age 78, a resident of Springfield and a former resident of Johnson County Illinois, passed away Thursday evening August 27, 2015, at 8:45 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Gertrude was born December 28, 1936 in Simpson Township (Johnson County) Illinois.  She was the third of seven children born to Homer Edward Baker and Gladys Fern (Whiteside) Baker.

On November 24, 1973, Gertrude was united in marriage to Charles A. Becker in Springfield, Illinois.  He survives.

Other survivors include: her siblings – Helen Burnett of Vienna, Homer (Gloria) Baker of Vienna, Louise (W.J.) McGill of Simpson, Margaret (Carl) Cameron of Vienna and Sue Bench of Vienna; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by: an infant brother – James Howard Baker; 3 brothers-in-law – Leonard Pence, Ben Burnett and Charles Bench, a nephew – Kevin Rich and a niece – Barbara Rose.

Gertrude was a 1955 graduate of Vienna High School.  She was employed as a clerk in the office of the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, prior to her retirement in the mid 1970’s.

Gertrude was a member of the Pond Community Ladies Club.  In her youth, she was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  More recently, Gertrude and Charles attended the Simpson Baptist Church.  She enjoyed quilting and flower gardening.  Gertrude is remembered for her thoughtful and caring trait of sending greeting cards and well wishes to a wide circle of family and friends.  She never forgot a birthday, anniversary or holiday and always sent a word of encouragement.  Gertrude also helped with the organization of 3 annual family reunions.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.  Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery, north of Vienna.

Visitation will be conducted Wednesday morning from 9:30  – 11 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
