Summer is here and that means that summer league baseball, softball and tee-ball are in full swing in Johnson County.
Since mid-May, the Johnson County Youth League has been the centerpiece for many families and their children’s three-month break from school. The ballpark in Vienna has begun to feel like a second home for the families, and a dinner consisting of popcorn and hot dogs has become all too familiar.
The months of practice and play are nearing an end for the players as the JCYL usually wraps up play in the beginning to middle of July.
Play for the 2015 season is nearing an end, but this year has been nothing short of another great year for the league and its teams.
Vienna teams have competed well across the many different age groups and have had some very memorable moments and games for each of the players.
The JCYL is more than just an outlet for the youth to play sports throughout the summer, it is also a great resource for players to learn lessons of team work, hard work and develop other traits through the sports.
According to Vienna Cardinals baseball coach Mike Vinson, one of the best aspects of the JCYL is how it prepares players for the next level of competition.
“JCYL is doing a very good job of building a foundation for these boys and girls as they further their baseball and softball careers through grade school, high school and hopefully college one day,” Vinson said.
The development of these players will soon be on display as the season comes to an end and school ball begins, but over the next few weeks the main focus will be on the final games and tournaments for the JCYL teams.
