Emma Ruth Landis, age 90 years, a resident of Grand Chain, Illinois and a former resident of rural Vienna, passed away Sunday evening, March 22, 2015, at 7 p.m. at the Metropolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Ruth was born November 19, 1924 in Pulaski County Illinois. She was the daughter of George Herbert Knight and Mamie (Volner) Knight.
On April 9, 1950, Ruth was united in marriage to M.H. “Jack” Landis in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 28, 2010.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie (Gary) Sommer of Grand Chain; two grandchildren, Lacey (Jeff) Wright and Landon (Lindsey) Sommer; four great grandchildren, Riley Wright, Henry Wright, Caroline Sommer and Jack Sommer; a brother, George (Rubie) Knight of Carmi; a sister, Opal Hankla of West Dundee; a special friend, Nancy Beal of Grantsburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her father, George Herbert Knight; her mother, Mamie Knight Morningstar; her stepfather, Dennis Morningstar; three sisters and two brothers.
Ruth had retired from Laidlaw Manufacturing in Metropolis. She was also a homemaker. Ruth loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She was a voracious reader and also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles.
Ruth was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church near New Columbia. She had taught in the Sunday School department and was a former Vacation Bible School worker.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the McGinnis Cemetery in Union County, Illinois. Pastor David Wright and Pastor Frank Forthman will officiate. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m.. There will be no public visitation.
