Back for its fourth year, the Sustainable Living Expo is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Dixon Springs Agriculture Center. The free event will be held rain or shine.
The Dixon Springs Ag Center is located at 345 State Highway 145N at Simpson in rural Pope County.
With the slogan of “Good Choices. Smart Living. Help Yourself,” the day-long event strives to promote self-reliance and sustainability at home, within communities and in the Southern Illinois region.
The programming for this year’s event is focused around local foods, energy, and safety, with informative and educational presentations and demonstrations scheduled throughout the day.
For those interested in local foods, information will be available about food preservation, aquaponics, beekeeping, vegetable gardening, small-scale cattle and backyard chicken farming, edible landscaping and much more.
The energy area will have information about interior and exterior home energy efficiency and water quality, as well as an ongoing demonstration utilizing an energy trailer.
Within the safety area, participants will have an opportunity to learn about farm, chainsaw and trail safety, along with lessons learned from the Brookport tornado and SUHD medical rescue corps.
As in the past, there will be a kids area set up with sustainable or science-based projects, as well as a tent housing local artisans who will be displaying their many works, as well as a food court area.
The Sustainable Living Expo began in 2010 as a project of the Shawnee Resource Conservation & Development Area.
Through the overwhelming support and interest of the surrounding community, as well as the work of staff and volunteers, the event grew and gained regional attention.
The event now features a new partnership with University of Illinois Extension.
