The SIU Board of Trustees announced Monday that Dr. Randy J. Dunn has been chosen to serve as the eighth President of Southern Illinois University. Randal Thomas, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, called Dunn’s selection an important step in the continuation of the proud history of the SIU system.
“I am pleased to share with our university community the selection of someone the Board believes will be a strong voice as we work to meet the challenges ahead of us,” said Chairman Thomas. “Randy Dunn has both the skills and the background to ensure that SIU continues to live up to its mission of providing a quality education for thousands of students, serving as an academic and economic engine and meeting the healthcare needs of individuals and families in central and southern Illinois.”
Dunn, who currently serves as the President of Youngstown State University, Ohio, was selected following a five-month national search assisted by Dallas-based R. William Funk and Associates, a nationally recognized search firm in the field of education. Dunn’s name was one of five finalists forwarded to the Board by the SIU Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC) after screening approximately 100 potential applicants. Dunn has strong connections and a long history with SIU and the southern Illinois region, which was of particular importance to the board.
The PSAC, which represented the diversity of the Southern Illinois University faculty, student and staff community was appointed in October of last year. Important to the foundation of the search was a survey sent to students, faculty and staff as well as two campus-wide community forums held on the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses which permitted interested individuals to give direct input to the Board and the Search Committee on the qualities they wanted to see in the next President of the SIU system.
“As I have said in the past and emphasize now, the Board wants the members of the PSAC to know that their commitment of time and talent to this process was greatly appreciated and was vital to the success of our search,” said Chairman Thomas.
Dr. Dunn will replace Dr. Glenn Poshard who has served as President of SIU since 2006. Poshard, a 3-degree graduate and former administrator and later Chair of the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University previously announced his plans to retire effective June 30, 2014.
