James Williamson – Obituary

Williamson, JamesJames Williamson, age 88, of Golconda, Illinois passed away February 15, 2014 at Baptist Health in Paducah, KY.

flagHe was born on August 24, 1925 to Tillet Henry and Amanda Louise (Cash) Williamson.  He married Bonetia Weekly on January 25, 1944.  James was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre.  He landed troops on Iwo Jima and saw the flag raised on Mount Suribachi. After the war, he moved to Moline, IL and worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 32 years. While living in Moline, he visited Pope County often and returned to live on his family farm after his retirement.

His memberships included Mount Olivet Baptist Church, VFW Post 9227, and Golconda Masonic Lodge 131.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt.  He was also a small aircraft pilot.

James is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bonetia Williamson of Golconda, IL; two daughters, Nancy Whittington of Nashville, TN, Jo Ellen Williamson and husband Brent Ewers of Atlanta, GA; grandson, James Whittington of Carbondale, IL; sister, Faye and husband Tom Pettie; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, T.H. Williamson.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Mount Olivet Church, Golconda, IL.  Bro. Virgil Cox will conduct the service. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Prospect Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-8:30pm on Tuesday at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, IL. Masonic service will be at 8:00pm, during the visitation.
