Merrilees, Virginia Ann (nee Reynolds) died after a long illness, Tuesday, November 26, 2013; beloved wife of the late David Sykes Merrilees, dearest mother of Jenny Merrilees Burt (Bradley Brent) and Robert David Merrilees (Joan Criswell-Merrilees); beloved grandmother of Rebecca Anne and Heather Jean Burt; Henry Abner, Kristin Margaret, and Thomas David Merrilees; Thomas Callahan and William Edward (“Teddy”) Criswell; dear sister of Mary Jane Reynolds Webb; dear daughter of the late Virginia Taylor Bogue and Chester Ross Reynolds; dear cousin and friend.
Mrs. Merrilees graduated Phi Betta Kappa from Knox College with a degree in Mathematics and then attended graduate school at Indiana University where she met her future husband, David. They married October 4, 1953 and relocated to Santa Monica, California. In 1965 they moved to Creve Coeur, Missouri where Mrs. Merrilees was an active member of the Kirkwood United Methodist Church, the Illinois Toy Fox Terrier Association, and the Greater St. Louis Knitters’ Guild. While her children were in elementary school, she regularly volunteered at the school library and later earned a degree in Library Science from Maryville University and volunteered with the Oasis Program helping children learn to read.
Mrs. Merrilees was devoted to her family and their many pets. She enjoyed traveling, particularly to Southern Illinois. Virginia loved to read and was the best letter writer the world has ever known.
Visitation to be held at the Bailey Funeral Home, 705 North 1st Street in Vienna, Illinois on Saturday, November 30th at 1:00 p.m. with services at 2:00 p.m and a brief graveside ceremony immediately following.
