Mr. James M. Abell, 94, of Galesburg died at 4:55 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2013 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born April 4, 1919 in Vienna, Ill. the son of McElroy and Cora Mae Sowards Abell. He married Gladys L. Stern in Piggot, Ark. on December 7, 1946. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2002.
He is survived by a son, James (Sylvia) Abell II of Zion, Ill.; a daughter, Virginia Knutson of Galesburg; one brother, David Abell of Marion, Ill.; one sister, Elizabeth Gibbs of Lansing, Mich.; five grandchildren, Tim and Chris Knutson, Bryan and Benjamin Abell and Kimberly Wallace (Jeff) Luberts and five great grandchildren, Kayla and Elizabeth Knutson, Justin Stubbs, Cole and Benjamin Abell; and one great-great grandchild, Hunter Stubbs. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and three sisters.
James served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Europe as a Sgt. He was a cook for the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion.
He worked for Gale Products for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Alpha Masonic Lodge #155. He also was a member of the East Main Congregational United Church of Christ for 60 years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Robin Faull will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. Memorials may be made to the East Main Congregational United Church of Christ.
