Johnson County will take to the polls Tuesday, April 9, as the 2013 consolidated election for mayors, clerks, trustees, school board members and other community leaders will be decided upon at the ballot box.
Polls open at six in the morning on Election Day and will remain open until seven in the evening.
“Consolidated elections are some of the most important elections a community can have,” Johnson County Election Authority Robin Harper-Whitehead said. “The candidates elected Tuesday will make up the governing body of our local communities and will have a large influence in the direction of those communities.”
Harper-Whitehead said consolidated elections are notorious for low-voter turnout even though they are the elections that have the most influence over decisions of local interests.
“Our consolidated elections require the same amount of preparations and staffing just as any of our federal elections,” Harper-Whitehead said, adding that Illinois’ election laws require this of all counties. “We prepare ballots for every registered voter in Johnson County and it is always unfortunate when they return unused.”
In person, absentee voting at the election office in Vienna is available now through April 8. The election office will open at 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, for Election Day voting.
