Donna Kean, age seventy-two years, of Vienna, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, February 26, 2013, at 11:17 AM at the Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna.
She was born October 5, 1940 in Flint, Michigan to Joseph Ward and Tennie Elizabeth (Jaco) Hutchison.
The family moved back to Johnson County when Donna was two years old and lived several places in the Vienna, Forman, and Belknap areas. Donna mainly grew up at Belknap and attended the Belknap Grade School. She graduated from Vienna High School in 1959.
Donna married Robert Edwin Kean on September 18, 1960 at the Belknap Methodist Church. She and Rob lived several places, including Carbondale, Metropolis, and Paducah, Kentucky, traveling with Rob’s employment as a mechanic. They eventually returned to Belknap.
Donna and Rob were blessed with three children: Robert Dale, born August 10, 1962 (his wife, Karin Ungar); Faith Lynn, born December 17, 1963 (her husband, James Haney); and Hunter Ray, born December 9, 1966.
After Donna and Rob separated in 1966, Donna raised her children at Belknap and then later moved to Vienna, where the family resided with Donna’s parents.
Donna was also a proud grandmother of 5 grandchildren: Norbert (Angie) Weidner, Kevin Kean, Adam Haney, Ethan Haney, & Noah Haney; great grandmother of Alyssa Brown and Hana Weidner; and dear sister of Max (Sharon) Hutchison and aunt to several nieces and nephews.
Donna worked at the Main Brothers Box and Lumber Company in Karnak during the 1970s. Then, after moving to Vienna, she spent several years working as a cook at the Hillview Health Care Center, retiring in the 1990s.
Donna made her home with her parents and helped care for both her father and mother, prior to their passing. In 2000, she moved with her mother to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Faith & Jim Haney, on Old Route 146. Due to failing health, Donna entered the Hillview Health Care Center in 2009.
Donna’s life was not easy, but she worked hard and loved her family more than herself. She was converted as a young girl and joined the Belknap Methodist Church. In later years, moved her membership to the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna.
Donna was very methodical and particular in everything she did. She was an excellent cook and was so happy when a dozen or more of her family would gather around the table for Sunday dinner. She suffered so much as her physical health declined and she had difficulty communicating the last few months. Yet, she would frequently struggle to ask, “Am I doing right?” In the hospital, as the nurses would try to adjust the bed and the numerous tubes she was hooked to, she would still manage to mouth the words, “Thank You.”
Donna left this world and its suffering as her daughter Faith told her good bye. She is now beyond the need of medicines and pain killers. Someday we will meet her again.
A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon, March 1, 2013, at 2 PM at the Reevesville Cemetery. Pastor Billy Thomas will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery from 1:30 – 2 PM.
Memorials may be made to the Reevesville Cemetery Fund, c/o Bruce Cummins, # 9 Chick Dr., Metropolis, IL 62960.
