Eva Gene McHenry, 96, a resident of Marion and a former resident of the Buncombe community passed away Monday , October 8, 2012, at 4:30 a.m. at the Marion Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Marion.
Eva Gene was born April 10, 1916 in Buncombe. She was the daughter of Herbert and Dora Mae (Escue) Ragsdale. She was united in marriage to Otis McHenry on May 22, 1937. He preceded her in death in October 1975.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Charles Fairbanks of Marion; one son, Robert “Bob” McHenry of Goreville; a grandson and wife Chad and Heidi Fairbanks.
In addition to her parents and husband, Eva Gene was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacey Rutledge, sister Helen Mae Crawford and four brothers – Franklin Ragsdale, Robert Dean Ragsdale, Herbert Lavon Ragsdale and William Jessie Ragsdale.
Eva Gene was a graduate of the Buncombe High School. Her parents operated the Ragsdale General Store in Buncombe for many years. Eva Gene grew up in and around the store. In later years, Eva Gene and her husband Otis owned and operated the business. Additionally, Eva Gene served for a short time as the postmaster of the Buncombe post office.
She was a member of the former Buncombe Ladies Club as well as the Marion “New-Comers” Club. Eva Gene was a member of the former Buncombe United Methodist Church. She enjoyed making many styles of crafts, such as hand-pieced quilts and crocheted afghans.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon, October 10, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
