Lee Morris Lavender, age 87 years, a resident of Metropolis, and a former resident of Vienna, passed away at 12 Noon, Friday, September 21, 2012, at the Metropolis Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Lee was born September 24, 1924 in Vienna. He was the son of Herbert Lee Lavender and Bernice Lou (Henry) Lavender.
Lee was formerly united in marriage to Marilyn Wedler Lavender.
Survivors include; his son – Mark Lavender, and his wife Laura, of Oak Forest, Ill.; and three grandchildren – Matthew David Lavender, Meghan Lynn Lavender and Lauren Mae Lavender.
In addition to his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his daughter – Lis Lavender.
Lee was a lifelong educator. He was a graduate of the Vienna Township High School, class of 1943, was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Murray State University. He began his early teaching career in the Goreville, Karnak and New Castle Public Schools. He then taught elementary education for 29 years at the South Holland Elementary School, District # 151, prior to his retirement in 1985. Lee was a member of the Illinois State Retired Teachers Association and the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association.
Lee was a member and Past Master of Vienna Masonic Lodge #150 AF&AM. He was also a member of the Vienna First Baptist Church.
Masonic rites will be accorded at 1 p.m. Monday, September 24, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. The funeral service will immediately follow the masonic rites. Dr. Ed Hollis will officiate.
Interment will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
