The Vienna-Goreville High School football team will open its 2012 season this Saturday at Vienna, with a game against Chester. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
Last year’s team finished the season with a 3-6 record, but as head coach Mike Rude noted, that mark was not far from being 5-4. The Eagles competed well last season, as they very nearly defeated Fairfield, and were tied with unbeaten BDC champion Carmi in the fourth quarter, before the Bulldogs pulled away late in the game. Coach Rude said that this year’s squad will be “the most competitive team we have fielded.” He added that one of the keys would be to “keep people healthy.” The program is beginning its sixth season, with this being the fourth year of competition at the varsity level.
With a strong freshman class and the continued growth of the youth league program, the future looks good for V-G football.
Next Monday, the Eagle’s freshman team travels to Chester, then will host Hamilton County on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. The sophomore squad will play at Chester next Tuesday, at 6:15 p.m.
