A resident of Vienna and a former resident of Grantsburg, IL.
Passed away Saturday morning, August 11, 2012, at 11 AM at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.
Brooksie was born March 27, 1923 in Herrin, Illinois. She was the daughter of William D. & Violet (Slankard) Simmons. Since her father was employed by the railroad, Brooksie was proud of the fact that she was born in a boxcar.
Brooksie was united in marriage to Charles Estes, Jr. on September 25, 1937 in Paducah, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on August 29, 1973. She was later united in marriage to Elmer Riley Turner on September 24, 1982. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1999.

Brooksie was a homemaker. She had also been employed as a clerk at the former Bullock’s Grocery in Grantsburg and the P.N. Hirsch Store in Vienna. Brooksie had also worked as an attendant at the Mount Shelter Care Home and as a housemother at the Mooseheart residential childcare facility. Through the years, Brooksie also provided housekeeping and childcare for a number of families, including the Housewright and Bullock families. She was proud to be an “honorary grandmother” to Brent and Brandon Bullock.
Brooksie was a member of the Belknap Pentecostal Church and had been a member of the former Grantsburg Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Along with her husband Riley, Brooksie enjoyed trail riding in the Shawnee National Forest and driving their wagon with a team of mules. She was devoted to her family and loved spending time visiting and enjoying family dinners. Brooksie also enjoyed the company of neighbors and friends. She especially cherished the time she spent with her granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, August 14, 2012, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Kenneth Capps will officiate.
Burial will be in the Wartrace Cemetery, west of Grantsburg.
Visitation will be from 11 AM – 1 PM Tuesday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
